Birds, vandalism, structural defects, storms and falling branches all pose a threat to building envelopes and other structures made of ETFE film. However, the robust film can withstand a lot and does not tear under tension. This is why most damage initially remains relatively minor. From a preventive maintenance perspective, however, it is still necessary to react to such damage.
Replacing an entire membrane cushion is cost-intensive and time-consuming. In most cases, the damaged component can only be dismantled with the help of a specialist company (e.g. facades or roofs at great heights). The damaged membrane cushion must be remade by the manufacturer, as the repair of entire ETFE membrane cushions is technically demanding.
The obvious thing to do is to close a damaged area (puncture, hole, crack) with a "patch". This repair patch should be as easy to apply as possible, hold permanently and remain as invisible as possible. These requirements are met by the ETFE adhesive tape from CMC Klebetechnik, which has been tried and tested for 30 years. All adhesive films from the CMC 777xx product family are extremely durable, highly transparent, do not yellow and are not infiltrated by water when properly installed (suitable for indoor and outdoor use).
However, whole rolls of adhesive tape are very impractical, especially when repairing minor damage at great heights. Many industrial climbers therefore cut strips of the material on the ground. However, even with such pre-cut strips, it used to be difficult to carry out a repair while hanging freely somewhere, as the protective cover had to be laboriously removed from the adhesive layer.

CMC Klebetechnik has developed a new version of the well-known ETFE adhesive tape CMC 77701 especially for the maintenance and repair of ETFE membrane structures. Die-cut parts made from this material can be removed very easily from the carrier film. Similar to a sheet full of labels, repairs can now even be carried out with gloves on. This means that even sticking on a large number of repair patches is child's play. No more fiddling with scissors or knives, no unnecessary consumption of material, as the correct format for the repair can be selected on site and does not have to be estimated from below, no laborious fumbling with the protective cover.
