Special adhesive films for use in MEA constructions

PPSU films for extreme hydrolysis resistance and durability
Special adhesive films for use in MEA constructions
CMC Klebetechnik GmbH

The two self-adhesive films CMC 61145 and CMC 15141 coated by CMC Klebetechnik are specially designed for applications in fuel cell stacks and PEM electrolysers. They have excellent electrical, chemical and thermal properties, as required for use as sub-gasket films.

CMC 61145 is based on a hydrolysis-resistant PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) carrier film with a thickness of 0.025 mm, resulting in a total thickness of 0.040 mm (including adhesive). Alternatively, CMC 15142 uses a pressure-resistant PPSU (polyphenylene sulfone) film with a thickness of 50µm. The almost unlimited hydrolytic stability of the PPSU film also contributes to the durability and reliability of the components manufactured with it - preferably for electrolysers. The acrylate adhesive used is high-molecular, temperature and hydrolysis resistant. Both product variants are supplied with a protective cover. Other film thicknesses up to 125/250µm are available on request.

Applications in fuel cells and electrolysers:

CMC 61145 and CMC 15142 are used in the field of hydrogen technology, particularly in PEM fuel cells and PEM electrolyzers. In this area, the subgasket adhesive films act as an important component in the production of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). The numerous positive properties are decisive for the functionality and durability of these systems:

  • Support function: The films hold the MEA taut and, due to their low thickness, enable maximum packing densities, which reduces the size of the device.
  • Media separation: They reliably separate the media (H2, O2) from each other.
  • No "poisoning": The adhesive used shows excellent properties in the leaching test. It does not contribute to a deterioration of the catalyst layer even after prolonged storage or operation.
  • Tightness: The system is effectively sealed against leaks. The viscoelastic adhesive also contributes to this.
  • Electrical insulation: The films offer a high dielectric strength for electrical insulation within the individual cells of the fuel cell stack.
  • Mechanical stability: As deformation-resistant films, CMC 61145 and CMC 15141 / CMC 15142 ensure low settling behavior and relieve the thin proton exchange membrane in the edge area of mechanical stress, thus preventing perforations.
  • Assembly: As easily punchable adhesive films on a stable carrier, the products facilitate the automated assembly of the MEA, e.g. in the roll-to-roll process.

As a manufacturer and coater of films, CMC Klebetechnik offers the option of making modifications such as different film materials, adhesives or thickness changes. Although CMC Klebetechnik offers numerous options for die-cutting or cutting plotters, we recommend integrating die-cutting and laminating directly into the system for automated production. The special adhesive films can be supplied up to a width of 1000 mm or pre-cut parts of this size.
