Nomex® Aramid Paper / Adhesive Tape

Nomex® from DuPont a synthetic, aromatic polyaramide polymer

Nomex® paper from DuPont (E-File number Nomex: E34739) is a synthetic, aromatic polyaramide polymer with excellent properties.

Manufactured in a complex paper process with two different types of fibers (flakes and fibrids), Nomex brings excellent chemical, mechanical and electrical resistance. Particularly in transformers, generators, motors and other electrical equipment, Nomex® (usually together with impregnating agents) enables very durable insulation with considerable power reserves. The material is flame retardant (UL 94 V0).

Nomex® paper from DuPont has the best possible property combination of thermal, chemical and electrical resistance. There are now other similar products on the market, but each has specific disadvantages.

For the adhesive coating of Nomex® adhesive tapes, we use only high-quality solvent-based industrial adhesives that can be used at temperatures up to 250°C. The adhesives are also suitable for use in the production process. This gives you an adhesive tape that perfectly complements the positive properties of Nomex® paper: easy application due to immediate bonding, dimensionally accurate dispensing, high performance of the adhesives with very good impregnant resistance. The impregnating agent absorption of Nomex is hardly negatively affected.

Whether single or double-sided adhesive, whether only 50 µm thick Nomex® 410 paper or up to 350 µm thick Nomex® 410: CMC supplies the right solution.

 Data sheet Nomex® 410

Nomex® Aramidpapier / Nomex® Klebeband
  • Nomex® 410 - basic grade, heavily calendered for good electrical and mechanical properties (available from 0.05 mm to 0.350 mm)

  • Nomex® 411 - non-calendered Nomex® 410 for better impregnant absorption, cushioning effect

  • Nomex® 818 - mica-filled version for extremely improved corona resistance and dielectric strength (approx. 10 times the service life of Nomex 411)

  • Nomex® E56A - relatively lightweight and therefore less costly alternative to Nomex® 410 for economical use

  • Nomex® N196 - improved capillary action for faster and more reliable impregnation

  • Nomex® 843S - a semiconducting variant for field forming in high voltage machines

CMC Klebetechnik supplies tapes, laminates, die-cuts and rolls from many of the versions listed above (some Nomex® versions are only available on request and with minimum quantities).

Advantages of Nomex:

  • very good dielectric strength, even without impregnation
  • has good mechanical strength in the compacted form
  • allows continuous use up to 220°C without loss of positive properties (at least 10 years), thus higher power density and longer service life are realizable
  • Nomex® has good corona resistance
  • can be used in ultra-low temperature applications down to near 0°K
  • Retains its dielectric strength even under high humidity conditions
  • is very resistant to many solvents, acids and alkalis
  • can be soaked and impregnated very well due to its paper structure
  • is in many cases flame retardant according to UL94 and self-extinguishing (V0)
  • is used as basic insulation in many insulation systems and is UL-listed (E34739)
  • can be used down to -196°C
  • can be used as high temperature resistant thermal insulation (Nomex 411: 0.12 W/mK)
  • Nomex® can be used as a very lightweight, space-saving flame barrier in lithium-ion battery packs
  • In an insulation environment (electrical insulation), Nomex® behaves very neutrally
  • The material is non-toxic and does not contain halogens
  • Nomex® dampens mechanical vibration and compensates for dimensional tolerances
  • As a bundle tape, Nomex® is used in the cell production of lithium-ion battery packs
